Listen to tree sport commentaries.
Which sport are they describing?
1. … and that was a great save … Wilkins ran cleverly into the penalty area but the
goalkeeper Samson came out of his goal, very bravely, and took the ball off his feet … he
did that really well … and now it’s Nilson … calmly to Martinez … back to Nilson …
they’re playing it slowly across the back of the defence now, looking for an opening …
2. … so, we’re in the fourth set and Merson is two games down … it’s thirty-forty in this
game – Merson now to serve to stay in this match … walking nervously to the line … my
goodness, he hit that hard … it was just out, I think … but Merson doesn’t like that
decision … he’s looking angrily at the umpire …
3. … and there’s the bell … the final lap … there are now only six runners in the leading
group … Dawson is trying desperately to stay with the leaders, but the three Kenyans are
running fast … this could be a new Olympic record …

a) Brian
I think I've been playing now for nearly forty years, ever since I was a little kid on the beach at
Blackpool, and it's always been my great passion in life. When I watch a game I appreciate the
athletic skill of the players, the tactics of the manager or coach, and the thrill of the uncertainty,
just not knowing how the game's going to go/ even when a very strong team's playing a very
weak team. There's always that possibility of a surprise, of the unexpected moment changing the
game.
b) Stephanie
Well, I've been doing it every winter holiday since I can remember. I love doing it because it's a
skill that improves every time you do it, er it's fast and it's exhilarating and although it's really
cold you can still get a tan when you do it. Of course the scenery's beautiful and it's really nice
when you're tired to go and have a drink in a bar afterwards. Of course the problem is that it's
expensive - you have to buy the equipment; the instruction's expensive too and it's really
dangerous, you can always break a leg doing it, but apart from that, I really like it.
c) Jo
Well, I've been playing it since I was at school - since I was quite young, 'cos my dad was always
very keen on it and he used to give me lessons, and then at university I joined a team and we
used to play quite a lot. It's quite fashionable at the moment, actually, all over Europe it's
becoming more fashionable and it's often difficult to book courts, you've got to get in there a
week before. Um I like it because it requires a lot of stamina. You've got to be fit, it's constant’
running right the way through and it doesn't take a long time. You can take off an hour at
lunchtime, go off , play, have a shower, come back and it's all over with, and you've done a lot
and it's not a lot of standing around, it's movement all the time. Er, you're often absolutely
exhausted at the end, and you can't really play for two hours at a shot although some people do.
It's usually for quite a short time.

G: Er, I like watching athletics on TV.
B: Me too. I love the Olympics.
G: Yeah.
B: And do you love golf? I really love it!
G: Golf! Golf! I hate golf, it’s really boring.
B: Oh I don’t think so. And I love extreme sports. My favourite is hang gliding. Would you like
to do it?
G: Hang gliding? Oh, I wouldn’t do that. It’s really dangerous.
B: Not really, you know. It’s good fun.
G: Oh no! look at the time. I’m late. Nice talking. Byeee!
B: Bye.

Meet two tennis stars.
Where are they now?
Listen to the article and put V (Victoria) or D (Donald).
1.___ is American.
2. ___ is from Belarus.
3. ___ is left-handed.
4. ___ was a champion at 15.
5. ___ is the youngest ever junior champion.
Where are they now?
A few years ago, we wrote about two possible new tennis stars. Here’s the original article – were
we right?
Are you going to watch Wimbledon this year? What new players are you going to follow? Here
are two young people to watch.
This year, I’m going to follow two young players. The first is Viktoria Azarenka from Belarus.
Viktoria got to the semi-finals of the Junior Wimbledon competition and the US Junior Open
when she was fifteen. A year later, she won the Junior Australian Open. Viktoria has a lot of
plans for this year. She is going to work hard to improve her game and she is going to become a
professional soon.
The other player with a bright future is Donald Young from the USA. At fifteen, Donald was the
youngest male junior champion in history. Left-handed Donald is ambitious. "I’m going to play
some professional games and try and win a match or two.” In fact, Donald is playing his first
professional match this weekend at the San Jose tournament in California. Then, at the end of the
month, he’s playing in the Tennis Channel Open.

World Cup Soccer

W= Woman M= Man
W: Hey. Have you been watching any of the World Cup soccer matches?
M: Well, I was watching until my favorite team was bounced out of the first round of play. I
mean, they should have made all the way to the second round, but a whole series of events cost
the team the opportunity to prove themselves on the world stage.
W: What do you mean?
M: Well, in the first match, two of their star players were out with nagging injuries, so the rest of
the players, unfortunately, just couldn't keep up with the opposing team.
W: Well, that just life. I mean every team is going to have players out with injuries.
M: Yea, but that's beside the point. And, and then, in the second game, the refs made some
terrible calls, allowing the opposing team to slip by with a victory. I mean, we were robbed on
that one. The refs must have been walking in their sleep!
W: But, didn't one of your own players accidentally kick the ball twice into his own goal? I mean
that doesn't sound like a bad call to me.
M: That's just beside the POINT!
W: Really?
M: And finally, our team was ahead in the final watch---I mean they were way out ahead until
the other team rallied in the final three minutes of play to squeak out a victory. It was a total
embarrassment for our team. Our team was booed. All I can say is that the sun must have been in
our players' eyes . . .
W: Uh, wasn't it a night game?
M: That's beside the point, too. You just not understanding anything I'm saying.
W: So, who are you rooting for now, seeing that your team has been eliminated?
M: Ah, I can't watch any more soccer, so I've been following an online chess tournament.
W: What?! Now, that has to be the most ridiculous reaction I have ever heard of. So, you're
going to completely boycott the rest of the play just because your team got bounced out of the
tournament?
M: Ah, forget it. You just don't understand
